My art has always been an important part of my life beginning as a child
growing up in rural Minnesota. I would draw what I saw around me;
landscapes, people, anything. I then got a very small camera and used
that to capture my family and surroundings. It was natural then for me
to get a degree in Art & Music from St. Cloud State University in
Minnesota. I taught Art & Music in Minnesota and Art in Dallas,
Texas as well as developed a freelance art business before moving to St.
Louis, Missouri.
It was while living in St. Louis that I became
intrigued with weaving baskets. It began as a hobby, weaving with my
friends in my basement and later teaching in the local Basket Supply
shop, but soon it became a passion.
My designs have evolved
through the years, intrigued and inspired by the materials that I work
with and other basketweavers. My Rainbow Series began as an experiment
with color and form and has seen many changes. It was my move to Sedona, Arizona with its strong creative energy
that help me to create new designs such as the blending of Raku with
basketweaving to create very unique sculptures, as well as using antlers
and gourds to create stunning wallhangings and sculptures.
Currently,
I am Gallery Director at the Sedona Arts Center. I co-founded a
Basketweaving Guild in Sedona and am a member of Verde Valley Weavers
and Spinners Guild in Sedona, Arizona, the Sedona Visual Artists
Coalition, Sedona Arts Center, and in addition to the Missouri
Basketweavers Guild, Association of Michigan Basketmakers, Intermountain
Weavers Conference, and National Basketry Organization (NBO). I have
been attending the Missouri Basketweavers Guild Convention since 1993,
taking classes and learning new techniques from Basketweavers across the
United States. Over the years, I have taught numerous basketweaving
classes and offer ongoing classes at my studio in Sedona.
My
work has been exhibited in juried art exhibits and galleries throughout
the country.
